Filling a gap of education and healthcare in this growing community in a cost effective sustainable way, the newly designed 16,480 SF expansion to this Community School has achieved a 71.2 percent reduction over standard energy performance, complying with the AIA 2030 Commitment Program. The 12 technology-driven classrooms with private restrooms, nurse’s exam, and a four exam room clinic are designed for both health and education needs in this underserved Tulsa neighborhood. Strategic site orientation optimizes natural light clerestories throughout and LED lighting with sensors reduce artificial lighting. Efficient heating and cooling further reduce energy costs.

The school district wanted to replace its existing school, originally designed by William Caudill, FAIA in 1950, with more than just a new building. They sought a school that would bring students, teachers, families and the entire community together even after the afternoon bell. But…space was a challenge. The historic elements of the original structure, like steel windows, were salvaged and will be used in the next facility constructed by the district. Just one of many sustainable features of this project that is anticipated to receive LEED Silver certification.
